Muscat: Taraweeh, the special night prayers during the holy month of Ramadhan will likely be held today at mosques around you if the Hilal Committee confirms moon sighting and Oman all set to begin fasting from Thursday.
Taraweeh prayers are considered optional (sunnah), or in other words, not obligatory, and are held on the eve of each day’s fasting and begins as soon as the moon is sighted and ends on the penultimate day as once the mon sighting for Eid-ul-Fitr is announced on the final day of Ramadhan, no Taraweeh is to be prayed.
While the mass congregations were stopped during the pandemic, the Supreme Committee in charge of examining a mechanism for dealing with developments resulting from the spread of the Corona virus (Covid-19) had last year allowed the Taraweeh prayers with strict Covid vigilance inside the mosques but congregational Iftar tents were banned after a surge in covid cases in some countries was reported.
For believers, Taraweeh is one of the many blessings that Holy month of Ramadhan brings for them. Offering this special prayer for the entire month provides spiritual as well as medical benefits.
“While physically Taraweeh prayers improve stamina, mentally it boosts self-confidence, and self-respect in being self-sustaining. Taraweeh not only purifies our soul but also keeps us healthy and fit,” Abdulla al Faizi, an Islamic scholar said, adding that the very idea of Taraweeh is to encourage visiting the mosque because offering this special prayer more often and praying in congregation will help nourish unity and mutual understanding between the fellow people.
Some people across the world take the Taraweeh prayers as an occasion to do complete recitation of the Qur’an considering the month as one of the religious observances of Ramadhan, by reciting at least one juz' per night in tarawih.
