Efforts on to ensure food availability during Ramadhan

MUSCAT: Efforts are on to ensure a smooth flow of foodstuff, predominantly fruits and vegetables, before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadhan, according to the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA).


The CPA officials made random visits in the past few days and vendors were told not to hike prices without any reason failing of which will invite action by the authority.


"We have made sure that the essential commodities are available before, during and post Ramadhan besides ensuring that the suppliers comply with laws and legislations related to consumer protection, prior to the beginning of the holy month of Ramadhan," said Salim bin Ali al Hakmani, Chairman of the Consumer Protection Authority.


He led a field visit of a team comprising Ahmed bin Nasser al Bakri, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Agriculture, Ahmed bin Mohammed al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Omani Farmers Association, and a number of officials of the concerned government agencies on Tuesday.


During the tour of Mawaleh Central Market, suppliers were emphasised of the importance that this market represents to consumers, and the provision of their needs, which necessitates the availability of various varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables in sufficient quantities throughout the month and after.


They were also urged to continue their cooperation with the concerned authorities and not to exploit the occasions when demand is high.


The officials also met with a number of consumers and listened to their observations and suggestions about the availability of commodities in the Mawaleh Central Market in sufficient quantities to cover the surging demand.


The teams from CPA have been visiting various commercial markets, shopping centres to get a closer look at their status and enhance and improve the quality of services provided to consumers by the suppliers.


There are efforts to meet with consumers and suppliers on the ground and engage in talks with them in everything related to the demand and supply of essentials during the month, according to the CPA.
