The large exhibition of works by the Dutch master Johannes Vermeer (1632-75) at the Rijks museum in Amsterdam is completely sold out, the museum announced on Saturday.
Until June 4, the museum will be showing 28 of the approximately 37 remaining paintings by the Dutch Baroque painter from the city of Delft. Never before have so many Vermeer paintings been exhibited at the same time.
Shortly after the opening on February 10, all 450,000 available tickets had been sold. The museum had then extended the opening hours to admit more visitors. But even these extra tickets are now sold out online, according to a museum spokeswoman.
The worldwide interest was so great that the museum’s website was temporarily blocked.
The museum did not say how many tickets had been sold in total.
For those who could not get a ticket, the museum offers an online exhibition under the title “Closer to Johannes Vermeer,” where all the paintings can be seen in detail. — dpa
