There is a celebration for Al Shaabaniyah in Sur on Tuesday. It is an ancient practice that is still part and parcel of people in Sur. The day, celebrated on the 14th of Shaaban, is a children's day when they get gifts from families, neighbours and friends.

Elders of Sur city in the South Eastern Governorate have fond memories of such custom. Children eagerly wait for it every year. On the morning of Al Shaabaniyah, children wear traditional new clothes with a smile. They go to every house in the neighbourhood and knock on the doors for gifts. The people welcome the arrival of tiny tots and give them either money or candies. This is part of the intangible heritage of the wilayat that parents and grandparents have long preserved.

Maryam al Araimi from Sur said, "This occasion marks the traditional popular legacy which is still in practice. It helps preserve our heritage, old customs and traditions." 'Al Shaabaniya' is similar to 'Qaranqashoo', which is celebrated by most of the governorates in the Sultanate of Oman in the middle of the blessed month of Ramadhan bearing the same name in most of the Arab Gulf countries.

The objective of Al Shaabaniyah is to create social harmony. This practice helps build social communication and instils a love of adherence to this beautiful heritage. This tradition also helps children learn to count money. It is important for the country's economy and significant in preserving Omani customs. Al Shaabaniyah reflects the spirit of harmony in Omani society.

It brings joy among the children who are seen chanting 'Give us Shaabaniyah'.

Civil society institutions, companies, authorities and charitable associations participate in this day by organising competitions, celebrations and distributing gifts in honour of children.
