The Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) said that the laboratory for net zero emissions identified 18 initiatives to be implemented by 2050.

The initiatives include automobile specifications in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion roadmaps for hydrogen-fueled heavy-duty trucks.

The lab also called for developing the infrastructure for electric vehicles by providing charging stations in line with the Authority for Public Services Regulation. The initiatives will include reducing carbon emissions at the main ports of Suhar, Duqm, and Salalah and the transportation network in general.

Dr. Ali bin Amer al Shaidhani, Under-Secretary for Communications and Information Technology, said that the ministry is working with automobile dealers to ensure that 79 percent of the cars on the roads will be electrically driven by 2035.

Earlier, the government said it wants to ensure that motorists can move from Muscat to Salalah and back in electric vehicles without worrying about finding stations with charge units.

Sources in the automobile market told the observer, "Several leading brands are slowly launching electric vehicles in the local market, but the buyers are still apprehensive about the availability of adequate and appropriate charging units in the country."
