New central laboratory to be ready in 2025

Muscat - The Ministry of Health laid the foundation stone for the Central Public Health Laboratory in the Wilayat of Seeb in the Governorate of Muscat on Tuesday.


MOH will establish a modern, integrated building for the laboratory that contains the latest technologies and equipment needed in the field of laboratory tests, to be an advanced laboratory.


Dr. Hanan bint Salem Al Kindi, Director of Public Health Laboratories Department at the Ministry of Health, said that the project will take around 25 months to complete, and is expected to be ready in the first half of 2025.

The main building of the Central Public Health Laboratory will unit departments such as chemical laboratory, biochemistry, toxins, food samples or outbreak laboratory, bacteriological laboratory (a reference laboratory for antibiotic-resistant microbes and a reference molecular laboratory).


The building will include a department for quality and risk management (a laboratory that provides the regional quality program), public health laboratory affairs, and a virological laboratory (regional polio reference laboratory, regional measles and rubella laboratory, national influenza laboratory, SARS-CoV-2 regional laboratory, and others).


The building will include a reference laboratory for pulmonary tuberculosis, epidemiology and laboratory surveillance, a laboratory for parasites, malaria and fungi, a newborn examination laboratory, genetic sequencing and a bioinformatics department, and a regional center with the World Health Organization for emerging and emerging diseases, in addition to the administrative and financial departments.
