The Omani Maritime Heritage Festival attracted 72,267 visitors over eight days, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism said. The festival concluded recently in the Wilayat of Sur.

MoHT sources said the festival was able to highlight the historical role of the Wilayat of Sur in the past and present, promoting and introducing the maritime heritage and tourism potentials in the Governorate of South Al Sharqiyah and stimulating tourism in the governorate.

The festival featured the Maritime Heritage Village, which depicted the story of the maritime heritage for which Wilayat of Sur is famous and was well-known in the past for its naval activities.

According to official sources, the festival succeeded in affirming the Wilayat of Sur's role in maritime history is not limited to the Sultanate of Oman but the entire West Asia region. It will be strengthened in the years to come with the development of the Maritime History Museum project.

There is a plan to organise the festival annually to introduce such events in various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman all around the year,

Intisar bint Ali Bahwan al Mukhainiya, Deputy Director of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the South East Governorate, said.

The Heritage Village had corners dedicated to handicrafts related to maritime heritage, folklore sessions, a popular café, a theatre for recreational and cultural events and activities, folk games, and performances of traditional arts related to the sea.

The activities included a simulation show of the traditional sea voyage to embody the historical journey of Omani ships to and from the Omani ports.

An Omani Food Carnival was also held that allowed visitors to explore the most famous Omani and international dishes, focusing on fresh seafood from local sources to reflect the richness of marine wealth in the state, in addition to heritage and entertainment shows.
