The Let’s Read Team is delighted to announce the launch of its 17th Children’s Writing Competition. This year, the participants are requested to write an original story set in Oman or to re-write a traditional Omani tale in their own words. Each story must be accompanied by a colourful illustration depicting the Omani landscape and characters from the story.
Participants can write their story in either English or Arabic. Jane Jaffer, chairperson of the Let’s Read Programme, said ‘We hope that children, aged eight to eighteen, from schools across the country, will participate in the writing competition. We would like to thank our sponsors: Renaissance Services, The London Speaker Bureau, and KPMG, for their support and sponsorship of this year’s competition.’
Stephen R Thomas, CEO, Renaissance Services said, “Renaissance is very happy to be part of this initiative, which will give children skills that cannot be taken away and will only grow over time while expanding their horizons.”
Tom Kenyon-Slaney, Chairman of the London Speaker Bureau, added,
“The process of participating in a writing competition is one of the most comprehensive and helpful super-curricular activities for a prospective school or university applicant.”
Maythaa Al Mandhary, CEO of the Let’s Read Team and a judge of the Arabic entries said, ‘We are looking forward to receiving some exciting stories from the students this year.’
The entries should be a maximum of 500 words long and can be submitted by hand to the Let’s Read Charity Bookshop on 3rd floor of Oman Avenues Mall (from 10am-8pm) or sent by email to: letsreadoman@gmail.com for the English entries. The Arabic entries can be sent to: maythaa.1988@gmail.com
To be considered for assessment and the opportunity to win great prizes, each entry must include the name, age, and contact details of the student and the name and contact details of their school. The closing date for submissions is Saturday 8th April 2023.
Entries to the competition will be divided for assessment into three different age groups. Entries will be read by at least three judges and graded according to specific criteria: descriptive setting, vivid characters, an exciting story, and colourful illustrations. With sufficient sponsorship, we hope to publish the winning stories in a book entitled, Stories from Oman.
