Muscat: Oman's weather office on Thursday said chances of sporadic rain of varying intensity, sometimes thundery, over the governorates of Musandam, North Al Batinah, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, Dhofar and parts of the Hajar Mountains and deserts of Al Wusta Governorate.
Temperatures are likely to drop in most of the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, especially in the hilly areas.
Muscat will have a maximum temperature of 22°C and a minimum of 16°C, while Suhar and Sur will have temperatures in a similar range.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Oman will continue to be affected by air troughs or low pressure until Saturday, and the cloud cover will be spread over the governorates of Musandam, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, Al Dakhiliyah and Muscat, leading to chances of heavy rain, including thunderstorms and hail.
The impact of the air trough will be extended to North Al Sharqiyah, South Al Sharqiyah, Al Wusta and Dhofar.
According to CAA or Oman Meteorology, rainfall in the range of 10 to 60 mm will lead to flowing wadis, snowfall and frost formation on mountain peaks, and active downward winds with a speed of 15 and 40 knots may lead to rising dust in open areas.
According to an official at Oman Meteorology, “Initially rain clouds will be concentrated in Musandam, northern governorates and areas around Hajar Mountains, but will gradually extend to the coastal areas of Dhofar Governorate.”
The official urged people to stay away from low-lying areas and electrical connections and avoid crossing wadis.
According to local sources, it rained heavily in Liwa, Dhank and Suhar, disrupting normal life due to flooding in residential neighbourhoods.
According to health experts, visitors should take care with appropriate winter clothes to avoid cold-related illnesses such as throat infections and flu, which have already been severe this year.
For outbound travellers to the UAE, authorities there have warned of heavy rain and unstable weather conditions for the next few days.
