NIZWA: Irrational use of water is causing groundwater depletion. The situation in some areas has assumed an alarming proportion.

Jumah School for Basic Education has a dedicated team called 'Belonging and Building' to go into the details of groundwater depletion.

The idea is to treat grey water generated from laundry water, dishwashing, showering, and cooking water, as they are better quality than black water (mixed with human waste). This is the basis for 'Belonging and Building' project of the school.

Project Idea: Salmah al Hanshi, a specialist in school activities at Jumah School for Basic Education, said: "The affiliation and building team at the school saw the necessity of developing a filtration system in which filter balls containing active carbon were used to filter bacteria and absorb heavy metals. Some beneficial bacteria quickly digest waste. Additionally, some vital rocks help purify the school's washbasin water containing soapy waste, toxic ammonia, and harmful human organic compounds. The final result is pure water suitable to irrigate plants in the school nursery. The primary beneficiaries of the project are the school students and the local community in general."

Project goals: "The most important objective of the project is to teach the students the values of preserving and recycling available environmental resources and spreading the culture of rationalising water in daily life," says Salmah al Hanshi.

Al Hanshi confirms that the project came to activate the educational curricula and direct students to use modern devices and equipment to study environmental sciences.

Salmah al Hanshi, the project's supervisor, called for solutions to environmental problems, such as water scarcity and impurity in water.
