Muscat Municipality has invited dedicated companies to compete in the tender for the construction of the Muttrah Square project, which will be established as of the innovative landmarks in the Muscat Governorate. The last date to collect the tender documents is January 15, 2023, and the last date to return the tender is February 15, 2023.

The tender fee is RO 155. As per Royal Directives to assign Muscat Municipality to implement the Muttrah Square project, Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidy, Governor of Muscat, signed an agreement to complete the project in September this year.

It may be noted that the Muttrah Square project got first place in the Belarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design, which was announced early this year. The project was prepared by Ahmed bin Mohammed al Ghadhami, Omaima bint Mahmoud al Hinai, and Abdullah bin Saleh al Bahri.

Speaking to the Observer, local businesses said they were hoping for the completion of this project at the earliest. “A facelift with modern facilities is essential to get more tourists from all over the world to this iconic tourist destination. It is already the main destination for cruise tourists as they come in thousands of thousands every year,” said the manager of a popular restaurant in the area.

The Muttrah Square project is expected to raise the value of Muttrah with a unique landmark, where an iconic bridge in the middle of the square is designed in the form of a bird over the sea.

The bridge captures the famous landmarks of Muttrah in one frame and will be surrounded by a mixed-use plaza that includes a dancing fountain, retail stores, and cafes, with lights that blend with the waves of the sea.

The aim of the competition was to invite designers and architects to propose a unique landmark for the area, taking into the 50 years of the Sultanate of Oman’s Renaissance and the goals of Oman Vision 2040.

The organisers received a total of 356 projects that met the competition’s requirements in the opening stage, and the theme revolved around the development of the Al Mina Waterfront area in the Wilayat of Muttrah.

Of these, ten projects were designed by 19 young Omanis (including five individual participations and five group projects) and were shortlisted for the final stage of the award.

The award targeted young Omanis who specialised in the fields of architecture, design, and urban planning can participate in the announced competition and are no more than 35 years of age.

Meanwhile, the second edition of the Belarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design (BHA) has received 149 entries to design the Maritime History Museum in the Wilayat of Sur in the Governorate of South al Sharqiyah.

From among entries that met the conditions set previously for the contest, 84 were submitted by individuals and 65 by groups.

The award jury is studying and sorting the entries with a view to picking up the top 30 project designs, which will later be shortlisted into ten qualifiers to contest the final stage.
