On November 18, 1972, the first issue of Oman newspaper hit the stands. This was a major step forward in the information field of the Sultanate of Oman. This year the newspaper celebrates the 50th anniversary of its publication.
The newspaper started with weekly editions, which continued till 1975. After that, there were twice-weekly editions from 1975 to 1980, and daily editions started in 1980. Until now, there have been 15,193 issues. The first Editor-in-chief was Abdullah bin Sakhar al Amiri.
"Today, whoever wants to go back to reading those transformations and look at them on the timeline must return to the pages of the newspaper where he can find everything, and he can read indicators of development and its philosophy, indicators of tensions on the political and economic line, and the rise and fall of scientific and literary production," wrote Assem al Sheidi, Editor-in-Chief of Oman newspaper.
He pointed out the newspaper was an important project of the modern renaissance of the Sultanate of Oman. Oman newspaper was not a commercial project that expires when the market needs it or stops achieving meaningful gains and profits.
As the Oman newspaper celebrates this occasion, it recalls generations of journalists who passed by the Oman newspaper and put their mark on it since beginning until today. The newspaper has reached a professional level and a large presence in the Omani and Arab scene.
“We promise all readers that the Oman newspaper will remain brilliant, pioneering, ambitious and striving towards carrying out its cognitive and enlightening role. The newspaper’s golden jubilee celebration is a source of happiness and pride for all of us. This newspaper was able to be at the forefront of the journalistic scene in the Sultanate of Oman during half a century and to be among the most prominent newspapers in the Arab world. It is still growing and still giving a lot despite all the challenges being faced in the world of journalism. It promises readers a lot more in the time to come,” said Al Sheidi.
“By 1997, Internet services were launched. At that time, our main objective was to reach the news from Oman to the Omani embassies and students across the globe," said Qais bin Abdulrahim bin Saleh al Saleh, who began his career at the establishment same year.
