Muscat: Nizwa Club representing by Al Sahwah team, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and the Oman Athletics Association, will organise the mountain run 'Himam'.
750 male and female runners from 42 countries will participate in the third edition of the Himam Mountain Run, which will be held from December 1 to 3 in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.
The sports and tourism event will provide a competitive opportunity for young professional and amateur runners to participate in high level races within international races.
The trails are designed for competitors to go through nature spots, farms and wadies while enjoying and exploring historical sites in the Hajar Mountains.
The first race for a distance of 100 km, 'Hajar Mountains Race', brings together the professionals from all over the world. The race will start from the Wilayat of Al Hamra towards the summit of the Al Jabal Al Akhader, and then the track will head towards the finish line in Birkat Al Moaz in the Wilayat of Nizwa.
The second and third races, 'ascent race', for 55 km and 'amateur race' for 25 km, will start from Birkat Al Banaz, passing through ancient farms and traditional village, then towards the wadies and a number of old villages of the Al Jabal Al Akhader.
The organisers launched a series of short races for 10 km, 5 km and 2km this year, in order to attract a larger segment of society to explore and participate in mountain running, and to emphasise the importance of physical health.
The organizers succeeded in obtaining membership in the International Mountain Running Federation, the race distances of 100 km, 55 km and 25 km registered in the global races. This allows the winner to obtain internationally recognised points while raising the rider’s global classification in mountain running, in 100 km distance the runner will receive four points, while in 55 km race the winner will receive three points and one point for the 25 km race.
Himam run is supported by the Petroleum Development Oman as the main sponsor, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority, the Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran), the national travel operator 'Zar Oman', Oman LNG, Mazoon Dairy, Al Safa Food and Golden Tulip Nizwa.
