The COP27 is part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) international environmental treaty signed by 154 states and aims to limit the impact of human activities on the climate. The Signatory Countries pledged to return to the meeting this year to agree on a further reduction of greenhouse gases and carbon dioxide emissions with the objective of keeping temperature rises within 1.5 °C limits.

The conference has four major objectives namely: mitigation of the emission of greenhouse gases, adaptation (how are countries going to adapt and help others do the same), climate finance with many finance-related discussions already on the agenda, and cooperation among the participating countries to reduce global warming to less than 2°C. The realization of these objectives requires quick measures that contribute to achieving the aspirations of all parties, which is the implementation of the Glasgow Climate Pact.

The conference will also focus on cooperation to enhance and facilitate agreement in negotiations to achieve tangible results in a balanced manner. The progress of partnership and cooperation will help achieve the goals set to ensure the world adopts a more flexible and sustainable economic model.

It is noteworthy that the Sultanate of Oman announced the realization of zero carbon neutrality by 2050 through an ambitious national plan and the establishment of the Oman Sustainability Centre based on the outcomes of the carbon management lab to keep pace with the global action on reducing carbon emissions. — ONA
