During an award ceremony hosted in Muscat, the Environment Society of Oman (ESO) has announced eight winners of the Namat Competition 2021-22 and launched the third edition of the competition for 2022-23.
Held in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, and with sponsorship from Veolia Oman and Emily’s Garden, the Namat Competition aims to encourage eco-friendly awareness within schools across the Sultanate and promote a conservation culture by tasking students to come up with sustainable ideas to overcome environmental issues in the areas of energy, waste and water management. In its second year, the competition saw over 600 students, teachers, and parents take part, forming 67 teams representing government schools from across the Sultanate.
Today’s event was hosted by ESO’s President, HH Sayyidah Tania al Said, with the winners receiving their prizes from Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambusaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Education; RO 1,000 for first place, RO 500 for second and RO 300 for third.
Best School in Water Management:
• 1st place- Al Qalaa School – Al Dakhiliyah Governorate
• 2nd place Al Fadhl bin Abbas School – South Al Batinah Governorate
• 3rd place — this place eliminated
Best School in Waste Management:
• 1st place- Lamees bint Amro Al Ansariyah School- North Al Sharqiyah Governorate
• 2nd place- Al Sinainah School — Al Buraimi Governorate
• 3rd place — Al Amal School – Muscat Governorate
Best School in Energy Management:
•1st place- Safiya Om Al Moamneen School — Al Dakhiliyah Governorate
• 2nd place — Omaia bint Qais School — North Al Batinah Governorate
• 3rd place — Qarn Al Alam School — Al Dakhiliyah Governorate
“The competition is a fun and engaging way for us to teach young Omanis about environmental issues, while encouraging them to apply this knowledge to tangible activities. The students have exceeded our expectations and have worked diligently, with great enthusiasm and a commendable positive spirit to implement their projects. Their incredible work deserves to be recognised and so we are pleased to have been able to celebrate their successes during this ceremony,” said Jawaher al Ghafri, Education Coordinator at ESO.
Ibrahim al Farsi, Activity Specialist, Ministry of Education said, “It is vitally important to do all we can to preserve the natural environment. Education is key in becoming environmentally aware and the quality and variety of submissions shows how attuned the next generation is to the challenges ahead. Congratulations to the winners and we look forward to even more innovative solutions next year.”
Building on the success of the competition, ESO also announced the launch of the third edition of the Namat Competition for 2022-23, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and under the exclusive sponsorship of Veolia Oman, a leading global and regional resource management company.
