23 Omanis get training to become entrepreneurs

Muscat: The Department of Family Development and Empowerment at the Ministry of Social Development celebrated on Monday the graduation of 23 participants in entrepreneurship programme, all from social security and limited income families.


The ceremony was held under auspices of Sayyidah Maani bint Abdullah al Busaidiyah, Director-General of Family Development at the Ministry of Social Development, at the Grand Millennium Hotel, in presence of a number of ministry officials and representatives of partner agencies.


During an eight-week period, the programme focused on professional and personal development, refining the capabilities of these graduates in the field of entrepreneurship, introducing them to the services and procedures provided to them by all parties related to entrepreneurship, holding periodic meetings with these bodies, and reviewing successful experiences in this aspect.


Five projects, out of the 18 projects, won the award for the best projects.


The “Prestigo” project won first place. Its idea is to recycle materials and use them to sew clothes in an elegant manner. The “Oman sacrifices” project came in second place. It is a application for delivering livestock and fresh meat.Third place went for the “Tala” project, which is about designing clothes for girls.


Fourthly, the "Aoun" project, which is an application for clearing the transactions that Sanad offices operate in and serves investors and citizens inside and outside the Sultanate of Oman. “Zelza” project took the fifth place. It is related to the manufacture of healthy spices and pickles.


The programme aimed to to empower families of social security and limited income socially and economically, instil the concept of entrepreneurship and the challenges and opportunities facing women entrepreneurs, help participants learn to study the market and apply marketing strategies in advertising projects, teach them financial planning, and enhance self-confidence.


Besides the Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, Oman Development Bank, Mohsin Haider Darwish Group, Modern College of Commerce and Science, and Qabas Company participated in the implementation of this training programme.


Fatma bint Abdullah al Rashidiyah, Assistant Director of the Department of Family Development and Empowerment, said in her speech: “Oman 2040” vision is the Sultanate of Oman’s gateway to meet challenges, keep pace with regional and global changes, exploit available opportunities and generate new ones in order to enhance economic competitiveness and social welfare and stimulate growth of confidence in the economic, social and developmental relations in all governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. One of the main priorities of the vision is to provide a decent and sustainable life for all, and to ensure welfare and societal protection so that the community is covered by insurance with an effective, sustainable and fair social safety net especially women, children, youth, persons with disabilities and the needy” .


She talked about the competencies and fields of work of the Ministry of Social Development to reflect the developmental requirements of each stage, as well as the expansion of its fields of work to include a wide range of services and important vital social issues.


She pointed out that the principles of the social work strategy are equity, empowerment and social inclusion, indicating that one of the most prominent programmes of the Ministry is the "Tamkeen" programme, whose vision is to invest the energy of the individual and the family in order to participate in development, and its mission is to empower individuals and families and rehabilitate them to be self-reliant.
