Low pressure impact from today; rains continue

The direct impact of the low pressure system coming from North India is expected to begin on Tuesday in the form of thunder showers.


The Directorate-General of Meteorology said that the second wave of the low pressure system will bring in convective clouds and rainfall of varying intensity over the governorates of South Al Sharqiyah, North Al Sharqiyah, Muscat, Al Wusta, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah and Al Dakhiliyah. The effect of the low pressure might extend to the plains and deserts to the west of Al Dhahirah and North Al Sharqiyah governorates.


Thunder showers were reported in Al Dakhiliyah and Al Buraimi governorates, on Monday.


The Met office noted that rainfall ranging between 20 mm and 60 mm are expected with chances of hail storm and downburst of between 50 and 70 km/hour decreasing visibility, dust storms and thunder showers.


Rainfall amounting to 42 mm was reported in the Wilayat of Izki on Monday while Al Jabal Al Akhdhar reported 35 mm, Dima W’attayeen 32 mm, Al Mudhaibi 15 mm, Nizwa 12 mm and Ibra 10 mm, according to a report issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.


The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) affirmed its readiness to handle any incidents resulting from heavy rains, calling on citizens, residents and visitors to avoid overflowing wadis and rough seas.



Civil Aviation Authority of the Sultanate of Oman has issued precautions to be taken due to the expected heavy thunderstorms that are forecast to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday.


The Authority also issued an alert for fishermen and the sea-goers stating the sea will be rough on all the coasts of Oman and reach a maximum of 4 metres on Tuesday and Wednesday. they request to avoid venturing out into the sea.


"The low pressure system is located towards the north east of Oman and we are expecting a trough. Today its effect has been on Al Hajar Mountains with the local rain. The thunderstorms might move towards the south west. Maybe there could be some rain or thunderstorm in Muscat on Tuesday or Wednesday especially south of Muscat Governorate," said Mohammed al Mashaiki, Meteorologist from Oman Met Office. South and North Sharqiyah might receive the highest amount of rainfall, especially Al Hajar Mountains and the adjoining areas, as well as the coastal areas," he added.


He warned that the public should not attempt to cross running wadis and should stay away from low lying areas especially areas where we are expecting the rains.


The authority has particularly requested the public to check the report on sea state before sailing.
