Muscat: The Ministry of Education, represented by the Department of Innovation and the Scientific Olympiad, is training 6 students to represent the Sultanate of Oman at the 63rd International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) 2022 in Norway from July 6 to 16.
On the importance of the Omani students’ participation, Ma’en al Hinai, Senior Scientific Olympiad specialist in the Ministry, said: “The Ministry sought to discover students who are good at mathematics, select the elite among them and refine their skills, through training on scientific subject according to four areas in mathematics: algebra, geometry, number theory, and combinations.
The selection of participating students went through three stages. The first stage was shortlisting students who are good at mathematics from various governorates. In the second stage, the Ministry implemented an online training programme for more than 30 students.
The third stage is the intensive training camp supported by a group of mathematics experts in which six students are trained for 10 hours per day for a week. They also get training in solving global exercises and problems inspired by previous international Olympiads to familiarise them with the patterns and methods of solving different questions.”
Dr Mahmoud bin Mohammed al Hashami, a mathematics teacher from Mazin bin Ghadouba School in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah, and a mathematics trainer for the students participating in this training camp, said: “The students participating in this camp are among the best students of the Sultanate of Oman in the field of mathematics, whom we look forward to, as they are trained in the four mathematics topics, and various international problems and tests in mathematics. I see in them enthusiasm and diligence and hope they will achieve advanced positions in this international Olympiad."
The students participating in this training camp express their eagerness to participate in the International Olympiad in Norway and expressed their appreciation of the efforts made by the ministry to provide training for them, and to impart knowledge to them that touches their passion for mathematics and contributed to enhancing their psychological and mental readiness to represent the Sultanate of Oman in the World Olympiad. The training courses play a major role in developing students’ skills and building up their self-confidence, in addition to improving their academic level and expanding their knowledge base in mathematics in its various branches.
