Muscat: Oman national powerlifting team is preparing to participate in the Asian Equipped Powerlifting Championships to be hosted by South Indian city of Coimbatore from June 17 to 21.
As many as 20 Asian countries including hosts India, Oman, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, China among others will take part in the event.
Oman will participate in four categories with eight weights. Oman powerlifters will participate in junior, youth, men and masters sections under the national coach Ahmed bin Salem al Hasani.
In the junior category, Musab bin Khaled al Siyabi will compete in the 74 kg.
In the youth category, Mohammed bin Musa Awlad Thani (93 kg) and Nasser bin Khaled al Siyabi (120 kg) will represent Oman.
In the men’s section, Al Azhar Bani Arabeh (53 kg), Khalifa al Jamahi (66 kg), Ayman bin Salem al Hasani (74 kg), Al Khattab bin Saeed al Siyabi (83 kg), Ayman al Maamari (93 kg) and Mohammed bin Saeed al Siyabi (105 kg) are the Omani contestants.
In the masters category, Ahmed bin Salem al Hasani will compete in 105 kg section.
Oman coach Ahmed bin Salem al Hasani said: "The technical staff of the team started preparing early with an indoor camp at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher for two months. Our external participations were stopped due to the Covid pandemic for two years, and the last participation was in 2019 in Hong Kong when Oman won 13 medals including two gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals.
“The team is participating in the 10th Asian championship, so the competition will be very important for the team. The team has a number of young players striving to win many medals, we count on to win the championship titles, especially in the junior category,” Al Hasani added.
