The symposium on 'The Role of National Mechanisms in the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights' begins here on Monday. It is organised by the Oman Human Rights Committee (OHRC) in cooperation with the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions.

The event will be attended by Mariam bint Abdullah al Attiyah, President of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, and President of The Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, and Chairperson of the National Human Rights Committee in Qatar.

More than 100 participants representing governments, private institutions, as well as civil society agencies, will take part in the event. Nine papers will be presented in three sessions during the two-day conference.

The symposium aims to introduce the national mechanisms concerned with the protection and promotion of human rights, enhance cooperation and partnership between the OHRC and various relevant authorities, highlight the role of the OHRC with governmental and non-governmental organisations, clarify contractual and non-contractual human rights mechanisms, and clarify the role of government agencies and civil society institutions in this regard.

It will also look into raising the efficiency of participants to implement policies and practices to achieve the objectives of protecting and promoting human rights, reviewing efforts, exchanging best practices to overcome challenges, ensuring optimal implementation of the contents of regional and international instruments and strengthening cooperation mechanisms at the national and international levels.

The symposium also aims to contribute to the implementation of the goals of Oman Vision 2040, reviewing successful experiences and exchanging experiences between the participating bodies in the field of human rights, in addition to shedding light on the common role between the OHRC and the various media outlets in following up on human rights issues.
