Muscat: The third GCC Games competitions will conclude in Kuwait on Tuesday. The Games was held from May 16 to 31 with more than 1,700 male and female participants.
Events were held in 23 games, 16 for men and 7 for women. Competitions were held in athletics, handball, volleyball, basketball, futsal, shooting, swimming, karate, judo, fencing and tennis, cycling, ice hockey, table tennis, padel and electronic sport.
The concluding today will witness the distribution of medals in four games, namely karate, fencing, tennis and handball.
Kuwait lead the medals tally with 84 medals and Bahrain own 57 medals, while the UAE have 44 medals, Qatar are fourth with 48 medals, Oman are ranked fifth with 29 medals and Saudi Arabia are in sixth and last place with 56 medals.
Oman national karate team will conclude campaign on the last day.
Oman's Ali al Raisi had participated in the 'kata - men's singles' and came fourth. Kuwait's Sayed Mohammed al Moussawi won the gold, UAE's Marwan al Mazmi won the silver and Saudi's Mesfer al Asmari took the bronze.
Taha bin Suleiman al Kishri, Secretary-General of the Oman Olympic Committee, thanked Shaikh Fahad Nasser Sabah al Ahmad Al Sabah, Chairman of the Kuwait Olympic Committee, for the great efforts made by the organising committee of the third GCC Games and for the good organisation and preparation. Also during the meeting, they discussed the technical levels achieved by the Gulf teams in the tournament and ways to develop the next tournaments, and the cooperation between the Oman Olympic Committee and the Public Authority for Youth and Sports.
200 samples of dope
Hana al Bati, Director-General of the Kuwait Anti-Doping Agency, confirmed that 200 samples have been collected so far from various sports of both sexes and from all countries participating in the third GCC Games, stressing that the work of anti-doping teams will continue until the end of the course in all competitions.
