The 12th Middle East and North Africa Clinical Toxicology Association Congress (MENATox2022) has come up with various recommendations, foremost of which being the inclusion of the poison control programmes within the relevant national strategies.
The congress was organised by the Ministry of Health, represented by the Directorate-General of Diseases Surveillance and Control (DGDSC), Department of Environmental and Occupational Health.
The congress, which concluded the other day, brought together 350 participants from the Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, India, South Africa, Yemen, Iraq and Lebanon along with 75 lecturers from different countries of the world.
The congress came up with various recommendations, foremost of which was the inclusion of the poison control programmes within the relevant national strategies, promoting the basic principles and importance of toxicology in the region, activating the role of the poison control centres in line with the latest development of health services, diagnosis and treatment in toxicology field.
The congress recommended the importance of promoting the surveillance and statistic system for the various poisoning cases in Oman in order to enable assess the situation and improve the service in the call centre, establish poisoning treatment units in the referral hospitals, providing the needful support for the toxicology researches, conducting training workshops frequently in dealing with poisoning cases and exposing to chemicals. In addition, the congress urged the development of postgraduate and fellowships programmes in toxicology in the region, as well as strengthening the linkage channels between the different poisoning control centres in the region.
