MUSCAT, MAY 8
The heritage camel racing festival concluded in the Wilayat of Shinas on Saturday. As many as 250 participants took part in the first ever heritage event under support of the local community and with donations exceeding RO 10,000 for the event. Hamid bin Hamdan al Busaidy, Deputy Wali of Shinas, was the chief guest for the concluding ceremony in presence of officials and invitees.
On the first day of the event on Friday, there were eight rounds for ‘Fatamean ‘category for one-year-old camels for a distance of 1,200 metres. The top five winners received cash prizes.
The opening round was won by ’Braqah’ for Yasir bin Gareab al Washahi covering the race distance in 1 minute 42 seconds.
In the second round, ‘Hamlool’ owned by Said bin Abdulah al Washahi came first a timing of 1:48. In the third round, ‘Gram’ owned by Naif bin Ganem al Khamisi, won the top award.
In the fourth round, ‘Shahean’, owned by Ali bin Suliman al Badi, finished first. In the following round, Takream’ owned by Younis bin Abdulah al Sibli snatched the first prize. In the sixth round, ‘Mayas’ owned by Abdulah bin Suliman al Rushadi, won the top award, while Ibrahim bin Ahmed al Sadi claimed the seventh round through ‘Ostorah’. The last round was claimed by ‘Almalyoon’ owned by Ali bin Hasen al Sadi.
On the second day, on Saturday, there were 10 rounds for ‘Fatamean ‘category (one-year-old camels) with a distance of 1,500 metres.
In the first round, ‘Takream’ owned by Ali al Wahibi won the top honours. In the second round ‘ Alnaif’ for Turky al Muqbali was the champion while ‘Qarar’ owned by Harib al Mahrooqi snatched the third round title. In the following round, Hamlool’ for Haza al Burtumani claimed the award while ‘Anood’ owned by Hamed al Ghafi, claimed the fourth round prize. In the seventh round, Nagoom’ for Ahmed al Mameri, lifted the title while in the eighth round, Sarab’ owned by Adil al Busaidy snatched the award. In the ninth round, ‘ Sulymanyah’ owned by Henad al Rushadi came top while in the concluding round ‘Shahin’ owned by Majed al Malki finished on top.
Also on the same day, there were three traditional rounds for Humar riders for a distance of 1,200 metres. In the first round, ‘Aldabi’ owned by Nwaaf al Jahwari was the champion while in the second round ‘Samha’ owned by Muhammed al Serahi won the top prize. In the third round, ‘ Atagee’ owned by Ahmed al Sadi claimed the prize.
A running race for 2km was conducted during the festival. Abdulah bin Salim al Qurani bagged the top prize and Khalifa bin Mohammed al Balushi ended as runner-up.
