The performance of Oman's best horses in Ibri proved to be a rare visual treat and captured the attention of the world as the wilayat relived an age-old tradition of horse riding.

The nerve-wracking series of performances that kept the near-capacity audience spellbound has won international acclaim as it was broadcast live globally.

"It was a feast for the eyes of fans of traditional horse races, being held during Eid holidays, and people from different corners who poured into Ibri to witness the power of these animals'', Anbar al Maskari, a tour guide who loves horses and attends the horse riding fests in other GCC countries, said.

The show that featured horses of different kinds from various governorates and wilayats, was also a day dedicated for these different breeds of horses to display their prowess.

"Horse shows have been a culture of Oman from time immemorial, and Ibri has been the hotspot with the local people being very keen on holding such traditional events.

The best of horses displayed their power as well as beauty at the race and show, many fans who watched the show said.

Oman has nearly 2,000 horses of various kinds. Out of them, more than 350 are purebred Arabian horses, 150 thoroughbreds and 1,500 indigenous breeds, the statistics available with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources indicated.

The country has a well maintained horse riding culture. Rearing of horses is one of the popular hobbies of citizens and equestrian activities are a part of the sports arena as well. Many Omanis take pride in keeping horses and take part in equestrian activities regionally and globally.

For Omanis, horse breeding is a passion, which is also a trait of the entire Arab culture. Horse races are held annually, and include the Royal Horse Race being organised by the Royal Stables and horse racing in various governorates.
