New York: The Sultanate of Oman has urged the global community to take a more active role to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands in accordance with international legitimacy decisions, notably Security Council Decisions No 224 and 338.

This was stated by Dr Mohammed Awadh al Hassan, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations (UN), who delivered a speech before the UN Security Council about the developments in the Palestinian issue.

Oman also welcomed the ‘statement’ called for by the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO), hoping that the parties concerned would respond to the mission entrusted to them and exhibit the level of cooperation needed to restore security and stability in all occupied Palestinian lands, particularly in the holy shrine of Al Quds (Jerusalem).

Oman pointed out that reports, including those issued by international organizations, affirm that conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories are “not normal and set to escalate due to recurring, unjustifiable Israeli aggression and violation of Palestinian people’s rights, which is in blatant breach of rules of the International Law and relevant decisions of the Security Council and the UN at large.

In particular, Oman denounced Israel’s provocative and illegal practices in the occupied Palestinian lands and its forces’ storming Al Aqsa Mosque and the holy shrine of Al Quds, aggressing the unarmed worshippers—which is in stark violation of the International Law, as well as human values and rights.

Oman urged the global community to shoulder its responsibilities and apply justice and law by ending the occupation and achieve peace through the restoration of the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to set up their own independent state on all the lands—occupied by Israel since June 6, 1967—with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The Sultanate of Oman described the situation in the Palestinian lands as highly alarming. It also warned that inaction by the Security Council encourages the occupying Israeli authorities to practise more aggressions and violations. Oman said that the Security Council must undertake practical steps to protect the Palestinians who are suffering under the Israeli occupation.
