New York: The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, emphasized the centrality of the Palestinian cause, calling on all parties to calm down and avoid any provocations and stressing the need to respect the special status of the holy sites in Jerusalem.
This was stated at an iftar party held by Dr Ambassador Mohamed al Hassan, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, within the context of Oman's presidency of the Arab Group in New York.
The event was attended by the representatives of the Arab countries to the UN.
The UN secretary-general called on the international community to do everything possible to help the stockholder parties to arrive at a settlement based on the UN resolutions, the international law and the conventions signed between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
The UN secretary-general urged the donner countries, including the Arab countries, to provide financial support to the activities and programmes overseen by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) due to its direct effect on the lives of the Palestinians. — ONA
