Fishing in the Wilayat of Barka may boost with the government's initiative to equip fishermen with modern fishing technologies.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources came out with the idea of equipping the fishermen with modern tools of fishing in cooperation with the private sector. An agreement to this effect has also been signed.

The agreement comes within the framework of cooperation between the ministry and the private sector and the interest in employing artisanal fishing techniques to keep pace with development and double fish production. The support includes machines for hauling boats, fishing nets and other modern machines and devices.

The ministry was keen to develop artisanal fishing to raise efficiency and support the fishing sector, which is one of the important programmes in the Sultanate of Oman.

It serves artisanal fishermen and workers in the fishing sector by providing them with modern fishing equipment and assistive devices in fishing operations that work to reduce effort and time.

It's important to provide support to deserving artisanal fishermen who meet the conditions of the fish support programmes of the ministry. It aims to increase production and relieve the burden resulting from traditional fishing methods in pulling fishing nets and boats that require effort and time.

Providing support to the Omani fishermen aims at enabling them to continue in the profession in the coastal governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.

There are 2,133 registered fishermen and 970 fishing boats in the Wilayat of Barka. The fish production from artisanal fishing reached 7,647 tonnes in 2020, with a production value of RO 8 million.

The initiative also aims to raise production, marketing, quality fishing and improve the standard of living of the community members in the coastal areas. It acts to encourage the younger generation to work in the fishing profession and use the latest equipment.

Notably, the fisheries sector is one of the important economic sectors in the Sultanate of Oman due to its potential and exploitable resources.

The sector has witnessed continuous growth over the past years. The importance of the fisheries sector is not limited to the economic aspect, but also includes the social and cultural elements, as it is considered one of the most important sectors in providing job opportunities.

The government's efforts are focused on supporting and motivating the national workforce to preserve and continue in the profession of parents and grandparents.
