Muscat: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the establishment of a new presidential council in Yemen.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement expressing the hope that the announcement of the establishment of a presidential leadership council in the sisterly Republic of Yemen will contribute to supporting the existing efforts to address the humanitarian situation and find a comprehensive political settlement that preserves Yemen's unity, sovereignty, and independence, in which all Yemeni parties participate, and in a manner that meets the aspirations of the brotherly Yemeni people in security and stability, a statement said.

Yemen’s exiled president stepped down on Thursday and passed power to a presidential council, a sweeping reshuffle aimed at jump-starting efforts to end the seven-year war that has roiled the Arabian Peninsula.

The president, Abdu Rabbu Mansour Hadi, announced his abdication days after a two-month cease-fire took effect and delegated the new presidential council to run the government and lead peace talks with the Iran-backed Houthi rebels who control Sana, Yemen’s capital, and the country’s northwest.

The new push to end the war follows seven years of grinding combat that has shattered the Yemeni state and spawned one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
