900 archaeological sites identified in Duqm

The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones in cooperation with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism and the Institute of Archeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences studied and identified archaeological sites in the Wilayat of Duqm. The teams of the archaeologists and specialists of the Institute have been studying several archaeological sites and human settlements in Duqm in general and Nufon village, located in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm.


Through the excavation studies, the team of scientists identified 155 archaeological sites in Nufon, and about 900 other archaeological sites in Duqm, in general, discovered between 2015 and 2022.


The archaeological studies and research conducted by the specialized team that came from the Republic of Czech, USA, Ukraine, Italy, France, and Germany focused on the village of Nufon which is characterized by the existence of the ancient human settlement. This was revealed by the archaeologists who documented the rock art sites which are unique in terms of type and quantity. In addition, the archeologist team excavated the mass graves of the Iron Age and discovered the Trilith stone monuments (Trilith ) and the coastal settlement of rocky hills. In addition, specialists studied the stone tools used in the old stone age in the Wilayat of Duqm.


For its part, the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones, in cooperation with the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, documented these settlements of ancient humans dating back to the Iron Age and the archaeological sites for the purposes of research, study, and provide the necessary protection for archaeological monuments in the Wilayat of Duqm.
