Al Ahsa: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and water Resources took part in the founding meeting of the International Dates Council, being held in the Governorate of Al Ahsa in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).
The meeting announced the establishment of the International Dates Council with its HQs in the KSA, as well as electing KSA a head of the council and the Sultanate of Oman as a representative of the executive body of the GCC region and Yemen.
The meeting also approved the council's strategy and the work plan. Dr Saud Hammoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, head of Oman's delegation referred in his speech during the meeting to Oman’s efforts in promoting date palm through devising a national strategy document to achieve the goals set towards producing high-quality palm fruits, in addition to marketing the product locally and internationally throughout the year and finding appropriate manufacturing industries.
Dr Al Habsi pointed out that Oman has adopted a number of initiatives to enhance the date palm sector. He also valued the great attention attached by the Government of the KSA, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and HRH the Crown Prince in promoting and sustaining the dates sector. He hailed the KSA's leading role in activating the International Date Council.
