Duqm - A number of officials and businessmen stressed the economic importance of Duqm Port to attract major investments as it is strategically located for the shipment of goods from the markets of the east to the west.
Dr. Salem bin Salim al Junaibi, vice president of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry and chairman of the chamber’s board of directors, Al Wusta Governorate Branch, said that the Duqm Port has the capabilities to receive the largest container ships, goods, and oil tankers, and petrochemicals.
He said that the port will be an important point to attract major international investments, especially in the logistics sector, and the port is a catalyst for the establishment of multiple industries and logistic services in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm.
Haitham bin Nasser al Taei, chief operating officer of Asyad Dry Dock, said that the Port of Duqm has a distinguished location overlooking the most important maritime trade lines, as well as its proximity to economies such as Singapore and India. Duqm port is the most modern in the region and will be equipped with the latest cranes for loading and unloading containers.
He said the dry dock and the port are two projects that complement each other, as an increase in the movement of Duqm Port brings commercial benefits to the dry dock as it can receive more ships to carry out repair operations.
Al Taie said, “The Dry Dock has been progressing at a steady pace and the year 2021 was good in terms of operations despite the global conditions. It was able to carry out maintenance work on 210 different projects.
Engineer Ali bin Abdullah al Zadjali, CEO of Duqm Quarries, said his company is working on an integrated plan with the specialists in managing Port of Duqm to make the most of the berth dedicated to minerals or mining products.
Nilesh Khimji, a member of the Board of Directors of Khimji Ramdas Group, said, "The strategic location of the Port of Duqm and its proximity to global trade lanes provide an opportunity for business communities to develop and expand their businesses and reach various markets in the Far East, Africa, India, and Asia."
Khimji Ramdas Group seeks to invest in the Port of Duqm and benefit from the incentives and services provided by the government to investors, appealing to the local business community to take advantage of the Port of Duqm.
He talked about the possibility of developing tourism activities in the Duqm region and linking them to the port, which will allow cruise ship owners to use the port of Duqm as a tourist station linked.
The total movement of ships in the Port of Duqm reached 466 at the end of June 2021, 6,547 containers were handled and about 183,000 tonnes of general cargo were shipped.
