The Embassy of Japan in the Sultanate of Oman on Wednesday held a ceremony at the Ambassador’s residence to confer The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star on Salem bin Nasser al Maskari, former secretary-general of the Higher Education Council of the Sultanate of Oman. The ceremony was attended by a number of Omani senior officials and dignitaries. Kobayashi Toshinori, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Sultanate of Oman, conferred the Order on Al Maskari on behalf of the Government of Japan.

The Government of Japan announced on November 3 the conferment of the Order on Al Maskari in recognition of his outstanding contributions to promoting friendly relations and mutual understanding between Japan and the Sultanate of Oman in the field of education, particularly academic exchange. The long-waited conferment ceremony was finally realised after a delay of a year due to concerns over the coronavirus.

The Order of the Rising Sun, one of the prestigious decorations in Japan, was introduced in 1875. The award of the order for non-Japanese nationals started in 1981.
