Muscat: The initiative to plant 10 million trees comes within the framework of boosting protection from the effects of climate change in addition to biodiversity at the level of the fertile environment in many natural habitats and various micro-animals that live in such cultivated environments in the Sultanate of Oman.
This was revealed at the third national workshop for plantation of 10 million trees, organised by the Environment Authority in cooperation with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and government authorities, was launched on Tuesday under the auspices of Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Deputy Governor of Muscat and Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of the
Environment Authority.
The initiative aims to shed light on the importance of carbon yield and achieving added value from the Omani wild trees and plants and benefiting from the recycled wastewater.
Mohammed bin Sulaiman al Kindi, Deputy Governor of Muscat, said that this national initiative, organised by the Environment Authority, is the fruit of cooperation between various parties representing the public and private sector and civil society organisations with a view to plant 10 million trees in a phased manner.
Dr Al Amri said that the authority is working side-by-side with various public and private institutions, individuals, societies, volunteering teams with the aim of planting 10 million trees in different environments in the Sultanate of Oman.
He added that plantation of trees is no longer considered an entertainment activity, but an urgent necessity to reduce emissions and absorb carbon dioxide in order to preserve the planet.
Dr Al Amri pointed to several global initiatives that followed our national initiative, some of them aimed to plant wild trees. Based on that, the Environment Authority is preparing nurseries in different governorates of the country to provide various types of wild trees.
The chairman of the Environment Authority said that everyone is a partner in protecting the environment and preserving the sustainability system, stressing that the national initiative to plant 10 million trees aims to achieve a set of programmes, foremost of which is combating desertification, increasing the green area and absorbing carbon dioxide.
