Muscat: The board of directors of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) branch in Al Dhahirah Governorate discussed the decision to stop the movement of trucks on the Suhar-Yanqul road.

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology on Tuesday decided to stop the movement of trucks (weighing seven tonnes and above) on the Suhar-Yanqul road from November 1.

This decision was taken to reduce traffic accidents and the ministry urged trucks to use the alternative dual carriageway roads.

The OCCI members, led by Saif bin Saeed al Badi, head of the branch in Al Dhahirah Governorate, discussed the move to stop the movement of trucks on the Suhar road.

It called for the decision to be reconsidered due to its negative impact on the land transport and logistics sector and the movement of trade exchange between the governorates of Al Dhahirah and North Al Batinah governorates, which might lead to an increase in the cost of freight as well as the time to deliver goods.

It added that the alternative roads will be not yet ready to accommodate the movement of trucks, which can lead to further traffic congestion on those roads.

OCCI said the current road is one of the main direct roads linking the governorate with the Port of Sohar, and also Al Dhahirah Governorate will host the border connecting Oman and Saudi Arabia.
