SALALAH: Challenges of the trade unions and support practices for workers in private sector were discussed at a recently held joint meeting of the officials of the Directorate General of Labour in Dhofar Governorate and General Federation of Trade Unions (GFOTU).

The meeting was held in the presence of Dr Salem bin Abdullah al Wahaibi, Director General of Labour in the Dhofar Governorate and heads of trade unions in the governorate.

Addressing the gathering, Nayef al Shanfari, Director of Labor Welfare in Dhofar Governorate, appreciated the role of trade unions for working as a link between workers and the companies and for amicably resolving their issues.

“They have been helpful in drawing our attention to labour issues and resolving them within the ambit of Omani Labour Law,” he said.

He agreed with the suggestions of the trade unions to have more interactions and said, “we are committed to having more dialogue with the trade unions as this is how we can resolve important issues of companies and workers. Such dialogues are in the interest of a healthy business atmosphere in the country.”

“The Department of Labour Welfare keeps track of workers issues and intervenes as and when our attention is drawn. We have our own teams to take care of labour issues. Implementation of the Omani Labor Law is our primary job, and we always welcome cooperation from trade unions. Stability of the labour market is of prime importance for the overall growth of the country,” Nayef Shanfari said.
