MUSCAT: Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) has ordered closure of a commercial establishment in Barka for raising prices of foodstuffs after taking advantage of the adverse situation.

According to a statement from the Authority, the shop was found to have violated the consumer protection law, especially during the current situation.

“The commercial establishment raised the prices of foodstuffs, taking advantage of the present climatic conditions arising out of the tropical cyclone Shaheen in the Sultanate,” the statement said.

Although the Authority did not reveal the name of the establishment, it said that “any breach in the rights of consumer including price rise will be dealt with seriously”,

The Authority in a statement earlier, said it has already chalked out a comprehensive plan including formation of teams of officials to deal with the situation.

“The teams, which will work in alternative shifts in morning and evening, will keep a watch on the markets and prices of commodities and services”, the statement said.

In addition, the officials will follow up on consumer complaints and will interact with owners of commercial establishments to ensure supply of all essential commodities.
