Khor Jarama in Ras al Hadd in the Wilayat of Sur has gained a good reputation in Oman and abroad due to its strategic location and its great role in the prosperity of trade in Oman and the neighbouring Gulf states, which made it and Ras Al Hadd an area important to civilized commercial partnership.

Khor Jarama is one of the largest and most important lagoons in Ras Al Hadd about 22 kilometres east of Sur.

It's features include multiple meanders, calm waters and soft sands. It has a long history of navigation, as it was and still is a haven for large and small ships that were plying the seas heading to and from the Gulf countries, the Arab world and Africa.

The writer and poet Salem al Hakmani, a resident of Ras Al-Had, said: "Khor Jarama had a major role in the prosperity of Omani trade and spreading it in many Arab and African countries."

He added, “The lagoon is a natural anchorage and port for unloading goods from ships. It is distinguished by its length and it stretches into a great distance on the land away from the waves of the Sea of Oman."

He explained that "this made the ships sail into this khor when the sea rages with its strong waves and during the strong north winds, where the ships find safety in this lagoon and the sailors find comfort and tranquility.

Al Hakmani explained that the people of Ras al Hadd built a tower on the outskirts of the lagoon to indicate the entrance. Guards are hired to supervise and monitor the area. a maritime law governing all ships that dock in it is set, in addition to its role in the prosperity of trade in the Wilayat of Sur, where it was the natural anchorage for merchant ships.

Al Hakmani also said that the Khor has a small island called Al-Sira Island, which is visited by flocks of birds throughout the year, explaining that its warm and calm waters are a haven for many types of small fish, especially sardines, as well as shrimp and lobster.

“The fishermen in the past used the Jarama creek and its abundant wealth as a source of their livelihood. They used to catch small fish, dry them and sell them in the neighboring willayats, and many salt-tolerant marine trees grow in it, the most important of which is the mangrove trees," he shared.

Al Hakmani added: "The other side of the creek is a residential area called Khor Jarama and "Al-Lubaid", which has several Ghaf and Sidr trees, and has a beautiful location. The area is also distinguished by its beautiful fortress in the middle, called the "Khor Grama " fortress."

As for the residents of Al-Lubaid, they practice fishing and grazing, and they have many large ships anchored in the creek, which are a source of their livelihood. The creek is a beautiful fishing area with a unique natural formation, frequented by many tourists from everywhere to enjoy its beautiful calm atmosphere, play sports, fishing picnic and entertainment.
