MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources participated in the ministerial meeting aimed at negotiating the rules on the support given to fisheries.

The virtual meeting was run from the headquarters of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva under the chairmanship of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the WTO. The meeting saw the participation of 108 ministers.

The Sultanate was represented in the meeting by Yaqoob Khalfan al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources for Fisheries.

The meeting comes within the framework of the WTO’s efforts to come up with a multilateral agreement on regulating fisheries in the 12th ministerial meeting, which will be held on November 30 in Geneva.

The Sultanate seeks to maintain its interests through participating in the negotiations of various topics.

The negotiations aim to reach a multilateral agreement in the WTO to regulate the support offered by countries in fisheries. The negotiation’s objective is to achieve the sustainable development goal 6.14 from the United Nations Agenda 2030 for sustainable development goals (SDGs), which were agreed upon in 2015. The purpose of the agenda is limiting the negative effects of the given support on fish stock all over the world. -- ONA
