Parents, understand your children, make them your friends, talk to them often and listen to their worries and concerns, give them confidence, if you want to save your children from becoming drug addicts, urges the Royal Oman Police (ROP).

Earnest efforts should also be made to save our children from addiction and the diseases it causes, habits that damage the mind, body, and negatively affect the soul.

"We are keen to show the reality of drugs and the harm they cause to the individual and society, and educating young people not to be a victim of temptations, peer pressure and lies that are promoted among the youth," said Captain Hareb bin Hamad said al Busaidy, Head of the Awareness Department at the General Administration of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Control.

Speaking on the occasion of the International Day against Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, he maintained that in order to save lives, everything that harms the body and mind must be abandoned.

"The observance of the International Day against Drugs and Psychotropic Substances aims to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking, and throughout the year, we aim to raise awareness among the community members about the dangers of drugs."

Captain Al Busaidy added that the efforts of the ROP have been focused on reducing the supply and demand for narcotic drugs with the presence of drug control departments and psychotropic substances in all governorates of the Sultanate. Besides, the ROP has the intensified monitoring and tracking of traders and smugglers by implementing strict measures to prevent the entry of these toxins into the territory of the Sultanate.

The ROP, with the coordination of various law implementing agencies, has been foiling efforts to traffic drugs and it spares no stones unturned in combating drug trafficking, and any transaction in drugs and prohibited substances is a criminal offence in the country. As a result of the coordinated efforts, many smuggling operations have been thwarted, and penalties and court rulings have a role in deterring these people from engaging in drug deals.

Captain Al Busaidi stressed the importance of the family's role in raising children, as it is the fist line of defence.

"The first line of social immunity is to protect our children from falling into the clutches of drugs, drug peddlers and save them from peer pressures as parents should keep close vigil over their friends. Achieving a drug-free society is a shared responsibility and a national duty of every citizen as well as resident in the country."
