Employment rate low among female graduates

The surveys carried out among higher education graduates since 2015 revealed that female employment rates are low compared to that of men, said Dr. Rahma Ibrahim al Mahrouqi, Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, who was hosted by Majlis A'Shura on Sunday.


The graduate survey for 2019 showed that the female employment rate was 8.8 percent, while the male employment rate was 39.5 percent.


The Minister said that the Omanization rate among academic staff members during the tenth five-year plan increased by 1.2%.


On the quality of private colleges and universities, she said the Omani Authority for Academic Accreditation does not give accreditation to any educational institution without evaluation.


On the delay in issuing the Higher Education Law, the minister said, "It is not possible to issue a law by day or night. The Ministry has completed preparing the law and has sent it to the competent authorities for review. "We have prepared a strategy in record time based on several points, including the quality of education. We focused on improving education and improving it, and we seek to have at least three private universities in the top ranking."


The minister said that non-Omanis represent 86% of workers in the private sector, according to data issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


Mahrouqi in her statement said the continued preference of Omani graduates for employment opportunities in the public sector thanks to the stability and job benefits that the sector provides, while non-Omanis working in the private sector tend to belong to the low-skilled labor categories.
