Muscat: As Oman records the prevalence of mutated variants of the covid-19, hospitals across the Sultanate recorded a surge in Covid-19 inpatients.
Oman on Monday reported 1806 new coronavirus cases with 19 deaths. 173 covid patients were admitted to hospitals across the country, taking the total number of inpatients to 1,196, including 373 in intensive care units.
In a statement to Oman News Agency, Dr. Nabil Al Lawati, Director of the field hospital for Covid-19 patients, said that the hospital's capacity has been increased to 150 beds, pointing out that within just two weeks, 50 beds were added.
The hospital received 31 cases yesterday. The hospital receives more than 24 cases on a daily basis, noting that the longer stay of patients in the hospital will significantly affect the reception of other cases, especially at the present time, he commented.
Al Lawati added that there is much pressure on beds as the number of cases is seeing a rise.
He explained that the current cases are more critical with a severe lack of oxygen or apparent failure in the respiratory system. It has been noted that these symptoms come out in the first week of contracting the virus but with previous cases, such symptoms used to appear in the second week.
Dr. Nabil explained that most patients in the field hospital aged below 60 years old, pointing out that there is a very small percentage of patients who received two doses of vaccine.
For those who received one dose, the symptoms were less severe than those who did not receive the vaccine, he added.
Meanwhile, the total number of inpatients in the field hospital has reached 124 so far, with an occupancy rate exceeding 90 percent.
