In an attempt to revive historic structures in the Sultanate, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture has signed an agreement with the Oman Tourism Development Company (Omran) to run and operate Nizwa Fort, one of the ancient and important landmarks. Nizwa Fort attracts hundreds of visitors. The area around the fort is also known for the Nizwa Souq or traditional market known for handicrafts. The pact was signed by Hassan bin Mohammed al Lawati, the minister’s adviser for heritage, and Mohammed al Mahrooqi, a board member at Omran, in the presence of representatives from both sides. The agreement is considered the first step in the cooperation between the ministry and Omran to “enrich cultural tourism”. The ministry’s adviser said: “Through this pact, we seek to motivate the sector to be an essential feeder to the national economy. Cooperation with Omran is a supportive step to run and operate all historical and cultural spots in the Sultanate and enhance the visitor experience. Visitors will have an unforgettable experience and benefit from the new facilities.” Peter Walichnowski, CEO of Omran, said: “This initiative opens the door for successful investments through historical spots to enhance cultural tourism in the country. The agreement goes in line with Omran targets that aim at environment conservation and protection of local communities, besides achieving revenues for the country.” He said providing more job opportunities and commitment to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are basic targets in all the company’s projects. “We will give one of the SMEs an opportunity to operate the Nizwa Fort and help promote local tourism.” Zainab al Nassri
