MUSCAT, MAY 28 - This is a time when the nation is united to help those affected by Cyclone Mekunu. While the government has deployed all its units to rehabilitate the affected people providing them with basic necessities, the private sector and civil teams from all over the Sultanate also have reached Dhofar to offer assistance. Charitable organisations in Muscat like Rahma Team and Dar al Atta’a have been urging the public to donate water bottles for distribution among residents in Salalah. Dar al Atta’a also launched an initiative called ‘Together for Oman’ for reconstruction and repair of houses affected by the cyclone.
The Dhofar Voluntary Team, which has been temporarily established now, is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhofar. It helps in providing accommodation, food and transport besides offering field volunteers from all over the Sultanate. The Mazoon Electricity has dispatched a second batch of electric transformers with a capacity of 315KV, while the Rural Areas Electricity Company continues to provide the affected areas with equipment needed for restoration. A number of police helicopters are also stationed in Thumrait to transport supplies to the affected areas as well as to airlift engineers and technicians to various parts of Dhofar to restore basic services.
