AI can merge creativity with efficiency

While conventional wisdom is that the rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms will stifle creative industries, studies are showing that it is not such a simple equation. If anything, AI is facilitating creativity and offering opportunities to everybody. The caveat is, as always, that it has to be used in the right way.

AI is now being used across all creative industries including fashion, architecture, interior design, physical design of products as well as graphic design. Generative AI is pitched at becoming a $1.3 trillion industry by 2030, according to Bloomberg.

What happened to the initial fear of AI taking away jobs in creative industries? So far, these fears seem to be mislaid.

In fact, there are many examples that explore the fusion between AI and creative arts.

The Harvard Business Review, for example, says that “Generative AI tools can solve an important challenge faced in idea contests: combining or merging a large number of ideas to produce much stronger ones”.

What they mean is, for example, that there may be many ideas for a particular design, but using AI unifies the divergent ideas to create new designs at a faster pace. Their example of a T-shirt designer who could experiment with multiple versions before finalising on a final product within a single day testifies to the way that creativity and efficiency can merge.

Another angle proposed by the HBR is to leverage Large Language Models to generate business ideas by linking seemingly unconnected nouns to create new entrepreneurial paths. The example given by them is to insert the words ‘airline’ and ‘chair’ with ‘university’ to an AI platform. ChatGPT then provided a business idea of creating a seamless educational experience for teachers to travel for conferences, even suggesting the name ‘edu-fly’.

The job of AI in this case is to provide suggestions whose implementation and feasibility are then taken up by human initiative.

Such a procedure leads to challenging established ideas and push the limits of human thought and innovation. A simple noun given to an AI platform could provide many pictures in an image generator but their uses are then left for the designers to develop.

An important and time saving contribution of generative AI tools for creative designers is to provide quick feedback. Depending on the prompt, these tools can provide information on feasibility, novelty, cost efficiency and competition, making it easier to adapt a product to a local market.

Such uses also encourage collaboration between designers and consumers.

By sharing ideas on public platforms, there are increased opportunities to get feedback in real time and tweak the designs even before they go into production, thus saving immense amount of capital.

The benefits of using AI in generating ideas and following through the entire process from conception to final production are immense. But as with all technology, there are issues and challenges. These include issues of copyright and ownership.

Ultimately, humans are going to continue to be responsible for the products they bring to the market or share with their clients. Education on the responsible use of emerging AI tools is imperative in this context.
