SQU to host 10th GCC Universities Sports Tournament

Muscat, JAN 13

Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) will organise the 10th Sports Tournament of GCC Universities and Higher Education Institutions from January 18 to 24.

The formal opening ceremony will be on Jan 19, under the auspices of HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.

The biennial event aims to foster unity and strengthen bonds of brotherhood among students from universities and higher education institutions across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations.

This edition will feature a range of sports, including athletics, swimming, football, 3x3 basketball, volleyball, badminton, and table tennis. Competitions are being held at various venues, such as the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, Seeb Sports Stadium, and the Military Technological College. The event provides a platform for students to showcase their athletic talents, with the potential to represent their countries on an international stage.

The tournament also aims to enhance students’ sense of belonging and pride in their institutions. By competing on a regional level, students gain exposure to different cultures and educational environments, fostering a sense of unity and mutual respect.

The tournament's slogan, 'Our Gulf, Our Legacy', reflects the deep-rooted connections and shared heritage of the Gulf nations. The event is seen as a crucial step in strengthening regional cooperation through sports, which is increasingly recognised as a powerful tool for diplomacy and cultural exchange.

HH Sayyid Theyazin underscored the role of sports in building a cohesive and resilient society. “Sports bring us together, transcending borders and fostering a spirit of brotherhood and fair competition. This tournament not only celebrates athletic excellence but also the unity and shared history of our Gulf nations.”

The tournament is expected to draw significant attention, with hundreds of students from GCC universities and higher education institutions participating. The event serves as a testament to the GCC’s commitment to nurturing young talent and providing them with opportunities to excel in both academics and sports.

Sultan Qaboos University has long been a proponent of integrating sports into its educational framework, recognising the holistic benefits of sports in developing well-rounded individuals. The university’s investment in hosting such a prestigious event underscores its commitment to fostering an environment where students can thrive both academically and athletically.
