Integrated urban growth, strategic development discussed

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, in partnership with the Office of the Governor of Al Wusta, hosted a workshop titled ‘Urban Strategy Execution Approach for Al Wusta Governorate’. The event was graced by Shaikh Ahmed bin Musallam al Kathiri, Governor of Al Wusta, and Dr Mohammed bin Ali al Muttawa, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning for Urban Planning, along with local governors, municipal council members and representatives from both public and private sectors.

The workshop focused on aligning strategic projects with the governorate’s urban strategy, ensuring cohesive planning through an integrated spatial framework. It emphasised directing investments to optimal locations and fostering guided urban growth to drive economic and social development. Key sessions included a presentation on the National Urban Strategy for Al Wusta, detailing its implementation programmes and associated projects. Working groups explored critical themes such as environmental sustainability, climate change adaptation, strategic urban development and effective management of natural resources.

The urban strategy envisions Al Wusta as a future hub for renewable energy, with interconnected centres promoting economic and social growth. Duqm is set to evolve as a global economic gateway, bolstered by its ports and business infrastructure, while Haima is planned as a regional hub offering comprehensive services for both public and private sectors.

Leveraging Al Wusta’s geographical advantages, the strategy aims to accelerate the transition to renewable energy while preserving ecosystems and efficiently managing natural resources.

Additionally, the governorate is positioned as a sustainable tourism destination, integrating its unique landscapes with cultural heritage.

The workshop concluded with the signing of strategic project agreements for Al Wusta, underscoring the commitment to the governorate’s development.

The agreements were signed by Shaikh Ahmed bin Musallam al Kathiri, Governor of Al Wusta and Dr Mohammed bin Ali al Muttawa, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning for Urban Planning.

This initiative represents a significant step towards realising the goals of Oman Vision 2040. It fosters collaboration between government entities and private stakeholders, aligning projects to meet community aspirations and strengthening Al Wusta’s role as a pivotal governorate within Oman.
