This season in Muscat has been characterised by a remarkable array of artistic initiatives, signalling a positive evolution for the country. Over the past three months, Oman’s capital has hosted Raneen, an initiative designed to cultivate a deeper appreciation for the breathtaking coastline and architecture of Muttrah.
Additionally, a series of art exhibitions have taken place, including a significant event at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, the Affordable Art Show, and a thoughtfully curated exhibition at Bait al Muzna. These events have beautifully showcased the talents of both local and international artists.
The art season is far from over, as Stal Gallery’s Contemporary Edition 2024 is set to open this December and will run through to January 2025. This highly anticipated exhibition features esteemed artists such as Idris Al Hooti, Hassan Meer, Heather Ford, Anwar Sonya, and Abdellah El Haitout.
Renowned for fostering dialogue in contemporary art, this exhibition promises a vibrant showcase of diverse creative expressions. Although it may not receive extensive marketing, it is undoubtedly worth exploring, not only for the talented artists involved but also for the unique contemporary works that offer compelling narratives and fresh perspectives for art enthusiasts.
Heather Ford’s work invites viewers into a harmonious interplay of cool blues and warm, bold hues.
The geometric composition of interlinked faces in various shades of blue and white evokes imagery of the ocean, wind, and cool winter months. In contrast, a trio of stylised, interconnected faces in shades of red, orange, and yellow infuses the artwork with a glowing, almost radiant energy.
Idris Al Hooti uniquely fuses abstraction and portraiture, presenting a central figure against a vibrant, pixelated backdrop. The woman, depicted with elongated features and minimal facial details, exudes a sense of calm and mystery.
Warm hues of orange, red, and maroon dominate the composition, contrasted by cooler shades of teal, blue, and purple. She appears to look beyond, her gaze an ambient whisper directed towards the viewer, all set amidst a foundation of concrete structures.
The symmetrical and ethereal aspects of the piece impart a contemplative, almost spiritual quality, inviting introspection. The juxtaposition of organic softness against the rigid geometric forms in the background reflects the merging of urbanisation—a blend of tradition and abstraction that tells a deeper story of the harmonic contrasts in humanity today.
The playful and nostalgic artwork of Hassan Meer resonates with childhood dreams and cherished moments. Its vivid, childlike imagery intertwined with abstract elements invites exploration. Inspired by children’s drawings, Meer studied their artistic expressions and integrated them into his paintings. By blending professional techniques of colour and texture with childlike forms, he crafts a unique visual language that bridges innocence and sophistication.
When asked about his work, Meer reflects, “My artwork is a reflection on the spiritual state of being, an exploration that captures the delicate, untainted essence of childhood. For over twenty years, I have utilised this style, continually drawing inspiration from its simplicity and depth.'
The artist added, 'I am captivated by the freedom of employing childlike icons and shapes alongside vibrant colours to evoke a sense of spirituality—profound, innocent, and transformative. To me, abstraction is a realm of boundless expression—a language where shapes and colours convey emotions and weave stories rich with layered meanings. It is a space where form transcends the tangible, creating a dialogue that resonates deeply within the soul.'
Meer ended, 'Through this harmonious blend of innocence and abstraction, my work offers an expressive journey—inviting viewers to perceive the world through a lens of light, wonder, and spiritual reflection.”
Beyond this exhibit, it is commendable that Oman is carving a distinct niche that emphasises quality over quantity. Local art organisers are dedicated to elevating artistic standards, curating exhibitions that not only highlight Omani talent but also align with the best practices seen in the region.
This way, Oman is steadily building its reputation by focusing on the caliber of its exhibits with organisers further aiming to enhance the quality of artistic dialogue and showcase Omani talent on a global stage. This commitment to quality not only boosts the confidence of Omani and Oman-based artists but also has the potential to attract international attention and tourism, enriching the local economy. By nurturing its artistic environment, Oman is positioning itself as a serious player in the evolving tapestry of contemporary art in the Gulf region.
