MUSCAT: Nearly 400 participants gathered at the Oman Hockey Stadium in Al Amerat to commemorate World Meditation Day, observed annually on December 21. Organised by the Art of Living Foundation in collaboration with Oman Hockey, the event provided a serene space for attendees to embrace the transformative practice of meditation.
The United Nations General Assembly designated December 21 as World Meditation Day to coincide with the winter solstice, emphasising the ancient practice’s profound impact on personal well-being and mental health.
Meditation, practiced globally for thousands of years, involves techniques like mindfulness and focused attention to achieve mental clarity, emotional balance and physical relaxation. Research highlights the benefits of meditation, including stress reduction, enhanced focus, improved sleep, and alleviation of anxiety and depression. It also supports physical health by lowering blood pressure and managing pain.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living, spoke during the UN observance of the day, stating, “Meditation is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity. It’s akin to mental health, helping us stay centred and overcome aggression and depression. The mental health crisis demands it more than ever.”
As the world continues to adopt meditation as a universal tool, Oman’s observance of the World Meditation Day underscores the importance of nurturing both mental and physical well-being through this timeless practice.
