Italian-based global engineering and certification services specialist RINA has been tapped by a key contractor for the Hafeet Rail project to provide an array of system integration and engineering services aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the $2.5 billion rail network linking Oman and the UAE.
Headquartered in Genoa (Italy), RINA is a global corporation specialising in the provision of engineering and consultancy services, as well as testing, inspection and certification across the Energy, Marine, Certification, Transport & Infrastructure and Industry sectors through a global network of 170 offices in 65 countries.
On Tuesday, the firm announced that it has been selected by Hassan Allam Construction and its subsidiary Kortech (a leading provider of turnkey solutions) to assist in the seamless execution the project.
In April, Hafeet Rail — the joint Omani-UAE developer and operator of the 303 km network linking Sohar Port with Abu Dhabi — named Siemens Mobility, together with its consortium partner Hassan Allam Construction, as the winner of the Railway Systems Design, Build & Integration package. As part of the package, Siemens Mobility and Hassan Allam Construction will deliver the design, build and integration of the ETCS Level 2 signaling, telecom and power supply systems across the network.
For its part, RINA says it has been tasked with ensuring the complete and safe integration of the railway’s subsystems, including signalling, telecommunications and operational technologies. The company will oversee the implementation of the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 signalling system, which is crucial for maintaining safety and reliability throughout the network.
Commenting on its role in the delivery of the strategic project, Andrea Raffetti, Middle East, India & Turkey Infrastructure & Mobility Director at RINA, said: “RINA’s extensive experience in railway system integration is key to the safe and efficient operation of this critical infrastructure. Our role in the Hafeet Rail project is to ensure that all subsystems work harmoniously, resulting in seamless and reliable performance.”
RINA’s scope on the Hafeet Rail project includes: Requirements & Configuration Management, System Interface and Integration Management, System Assurance and Safety Analysis, RAM (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability) Management, Test & Commissioning Activities and Specialties such as Human Factor, Ergonomics, Cybersecurity and Electromagnetic Compatibility.
“RINA’s involvement ensures that the entire system will meet the client’s exacting specifications, guaranteeing safety and operational success for this critical infrastructure,” the company further added.
Construction work on the Hafeet Rail project is currently being undertaken by the partnership of Trojan Construction Group (NPC) of the UAE and Galfar Engineering and Contracting of Oman.
Assisting the project company in the overall delivery of the project are a number of international contractors and technology providers, notably French transport engineering and consultancy firm Systra, which is providing project and engineering consultancy services. US-based locomotive manufacturers Progress Rail is supplying a fleet or freight locomotives for the network.
