MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of the Netherlands commemorated over 400 years of maritime history and enduring ties at an event held at the historic Al Mirani Fort under the auspices of Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism (MoHT) on Wednesday. In addition to the exchange of commemorative plaques, an exclusive canapé menu was crafted by two chefs: Dutch chef Peter Gast, celebrated for his Michelin-starred culinary artistry, and acclaimed Omani chef Dina Macki, known for her innovative approach to Omani flavours. The duo rediscovered the enduring tastes of friendship between the two nations.
The menu featured a creative blend of typical Omani and Dutch ingredients, such as mussels and dates, creating a unique culinary experience that honoured the traditions of both nations over the centuries.
Speaking to Oman Daily Observer, Azzan al Busaidy said, “Oman and the Netherlands share a timeless history and bond. We have maintained cordial relations for centuries, and what better way to rekindle ties than at this beautiful Al Mirani Fort overlooking the serene ocean? We are confident that our bonds will strengthen further in the coming times.”
The event brought together various ministerial representatives, scholars, dignitaries, and business leaders, alongside members of the local community, turning the fort into a platform for rich cultural exchange. It also marked the official launch of a series of events planned for the coming year, ranging from sports activities to cultural initiatives, all aimed at further bolstering the ties between the two nations.
“We are glad to host such a centuries-old relationship in a fort that has stood the test of time. It’s truly extraordinary that two nations, separated by oceans and seas, have forged such an enduring partnership over the past centuries. Looking to the future, events like this are vital for inspiring and educating new generations, highlighting the opportunities for collaboration that lie ahead,” said Stella Kloth, Ambassador of the Netherlands to the Sultanate of Oman.
